The Pastor’s Pen

Your welcome to First Christian Church of Stow is ringing in my ears!  Yes, it started with Al Naylor and the elders!  Yes, it was underlined by your board chair, Dave Brandon!  Yes, it was your excellent church staff and a lovely breakfast event!  And then all of you from Sunday morning worship, to committee meetings, the Ice Cream Social, and indeed the Pancake Breakfast on July 4th . . .  Mary and I feel very welcome to be with you in this interim period.

In the past two weeks we have said “Good Bye” to Mantua Center Christian Church, put a “bow” on the sell of our house in Cleveland Heights (would you believe it took two years and two months for our home to sell?), cleared the basement and completed a final cleaning!  Our plan is simple – “be” at home with you and “be” at home in Hiram!

God Bless!

Houston Bowers,

Interim Pastor

Welcome, Erin

We are pleased to welcome Erin McCreight as our Intern in Ministry this summer.  She will be working with our congregation while earning credit hours at school.  One of the responsibilities she will be fulfilling is to be ‘on call’ each Friday until August 10.  You may reach Erin on her cell phone (330-205-8665), by leaving a message in her cubby in the office or by email (erin.mccreight@gmail.com) or by calling the church office.

Prayer Board

We are told in Revelation that God is standing at your heart’s door waiting to be part of our life.  He is knocking so you will talk with him.  One way that I answer God’s call is to go to the prayer board to see what is on you heart’s so that I can pray for that need.

“Behold, I stand at the door, an knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him and will sup with him and he with me.”  Revelation 3:20

submiited by Dorothy Robinson

from the Directors of Music:

Clean Robes, Thankful Singers!

You know how there are tasks you always think you’ll get to, and then you either put them off or forget about them… and they don’t get done?

Well, we’d like to thank Faye Haws for noticing a job that needed doing, and then doing it!  During the Chancel Choir’s “off-season,” Faye has been taking the choir robes home, a few at a time, and washing them.  If you look in the robe closet, it’s clear which ones look fresh and clean.

Choir members, please tell Faye how much you appreciate her thoughtfulness the next time you see her!

On Music

There is an old Jewish legend about the origin of praise:

After God created humankind, says the legend,

God asked the angels what they thought of the world.

“Only one thing is lacking,” they said,

“the sound of praise to the Creator.”

So, the story continues, God created music: the voice of birds,

the whispering wind, the murmuring ocean,

and melody in people’s hearts.

If you would like to give to the Cleveland Christian Home for Children, but don’t know how, we are going to make it easier.  Just place your donation in an envelope, mark the envelope “Cleveland Christian Home” and place it in the weekly offering tray.  Once a month, we will see that a check is sent to them for all the amount donated.  If you note your name on your donation, it can be added to your giving total (for tax purposes) for the year.  Please note:  this is in addition to the amount pledge to FCC.

thank you

“Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

It was so nice of you, and appreciated more than words can say!”

Our family appreciated the prayers and cards sent to our daughter, Karyn during her hospital stay and her recuperation time.  Sorry to say it is not over yet, but she is improving daily.  We are certainly blessed, just wish Tulsa, Oklahoma wasn’t so far away.

Love and Hugs,

Lee & Juanita Younkin

MEMORY VERSE OF THE MONTH

For July we have chosen a memory verse that will be featured during Vacation Bible School.  We hope that you will join the VBS children and memorize this verse.

But this command I gave them, 'Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people; and walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.  Jeremiah 7:23a

The bolded verse is for the children.  We hope the more mature children and adults will take on the challenge to memorize the full verse.

Challenges of an Uncertain Economy

Recent discussions among my friends and co-workers have centered around the rising cost of gas and food and what items to cut from my budget in order to meet the rising costs of essentials.  Stories in the news already indicate people who have turned off electricity in their homes due to inability to pay bills. Other stories talk about people having to get a second job to pay for the gas to get to their first job.  Most of us have limited financial resources which are being strained and tested in the current ecomony. I was thinking about the families we serve through Interfaith Hospitality Network.  These families are already homeless, with few possessions, in need of reasonably housing.  How can they possibly adjust to the economic changes when they have so little to begin with?  After some thought, I was trying to figure out a way to continue to support this and other community needs for food with the increasing restrictions in my budget.  The solution that I came up with was to grow vegetables and/or fruit – some for my consumption and some to share. Do any of you grow vegetables that you would be willing to share?  I am planting in pots and containers across my back patio.  Instead of planting flowers in my window boxes, I am planting green beans in them. Do you have a spot you could plant a tomato or pepper plant in a pot?  Good Neighbors will gladly accept fresh produce donations.  If you bring your produce donations to the church kitchen on any Sunday, they will be dropped off at Good Neighbors on the following Tuesday.  Of course, anyone in need in the congregation is also welcome to pick from the available produce.  Consideration is also being given to planting a vegetable garden on church property.  Contact Ann Halpin for ideas or questions.

Prayer helps me analyze the problem I face.  Unfortunately, sometimes I go a long way down the road in a quandary, suffering inside, before I finally ask myself, “Why don’t I talk to God about it?”
