SYNOPSIS: Children of Eden

Children of Eden is perhaps the least describable Schwartz musical because it holds meaning on so many levels. The excuse for the story is Genesis--both the first books and the story of Noah's ark. But audiences immediately experience that the relationships between Father, Adam, and Eve has more to do with earthly families, their immediate challenges and their generational legacies.

This show is now in the top 20 of musicals most frequently licensed by Music Theatre International, which is unusual for a show that never played on Broadway. It's popularity has spread by word of mouth. The score is a favorite of many Schwartz fans and includes a vast range of styles beyond "typical" Broadway. The love song "In Whatever Time We Have" is thought to be the most popular Schwartz song performed at weddings.

ACT ONE: The story of Adam and Eve.

Father creates the world and Adam & Eve.  They disobey Father and are exiled from the Garden of Eden, left to raise their family in the wilderness.  At the end of Act 1, Father’s disappointment in Adam, Eve and Cain is replaced by hopefulness in their third son Seth.

ACT TWO: The story of Noah and the flood.

Act II begins several generations later with Noah and his family building the ark.  Father is once again disappointed in Cain’s descendents, so he tells Noah, a descendent of Seth, that he will destroy the earth with a flood.  Father instructs Noah to bring the animals and his wife, his three sons and their wives.  Japheth, not having taken a wife, chooses a descendent of Cain, Yonah, to accompany him.

How Noah handles this situation teaches both him and Father a valuable lesson in raising their children that even we, as parents today, need to learn.
